While I do my best to be accurate and pray that the Lord offers me discernment in my writing, inevitably I will be wrong on some matters. Therefore I implore anyone reading this blog to compare what I say to Holy Scripture. Don't believe me; believe the Bible!

Do Baby Boomers need to be ministered to differently than other groups?

On Christianity Today we find a piece asking the following questions:

So how do we minister to Boomers? How do we begin to break through the walls of denial, indifference, arrogance, rebellion, and fear that seem to surround this generation? How do we share Christ with a people group that is known for spiritual exploration and tolerance? How do we meet the needs of Boomers who are facing unprecedented changes? How do we break the code? (Emphasis in original)

That’s an interesting question. How do we reach those people belonging to the baby boomer generation? As the largest population segment in America, it’s a pertinent one too.

In this article, several man-centered solutions are presented. One solution being that ministers need to “recognize that Boomers do not want to be referred to as ‘seniors’ and don’t want to be associated with stereotypical seniors ministries”. Another has ministry workers helping boomers to “discover [their] gifts and strengths (using Meyers-Briggs, Strengths Finder, or other tools)”.

What’s not mentioned at all is the even bigger issue: the all-sufficiency of Scripture. Is the Bible as 2 Timothy 3:16 says, “…inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness”? Can the Bible minister to baby boomers, or do we need new and “innovative” techniques to reach them?

I am a simple man who usually sees things in only black and white. Often the gray masquerading as reality isn’t really there. The gray doesn’t exist in this regard either. Either the Bible and the preaching from it is sufficient for Baby Boomers, or it isn’t. It’s that simple, nothing more than elementary binary logic. Let God be true and every man a liar – I say the Holy Word is sufficient!

It doesn’t matter if a group of people are young, old, black, white, or green with purple spots, the methods for reaching them are the same. The Bible must be preached, simply and clearly. That’s all that’s been needed, and all that ever will be needed.
